Dear Class,
Sorry for the unexpected delay. It was a battle to get an internet tech here during an outage in my area. Please email me your response if you wish to participate in the bonus questions by Sunday 5/20/11. If you need the full week to complete this, please email me a request so that your final grade may be withheld to include this part. However, I believe you’ll find the question requires a small amount of time if you apply the techniques seen in class and in the video below.

Bonus (2 pts total)
1. If we invest $7500 in an account compounding monthly at 5% annual interest, how long will it take to accrue $10,000?

2. If we use the same interest rate and compounding as above, how long will it take to double our investment? (We will not necessarily use the same principal.)

Dear Class,
Please take note of the following instructions very carefully. The assignment is brief so all of the elements are significant.

Re-take the practice final on a separate piece of paper as if it is the “real thing”. (No notes.)
Grade your work and write down the time required and score (such as 23/25 questions correct).

This is intended to provide you with an opportunity to earn credit while helping you evaluate what you need to practice.

The final is next Monday 5/14/12 at 5 PM. You’ll have 2.5 hours to complete the final, but this should be far more time than needed. Please bring a calculator if you wish to use one. It is not necessary for the work (only the bonus topic). If you do not bring a calculator, there is no guarantee that you will be able to use your cellphone.

Video Notes
1. Gaussian Elimination

Extra Copy of the Practice Final
Practice Final

Optional Bonus Topic
Compound Interest – Solving with Log 1
Compound Interest – Solving with Log 2

Optional Gaussian Elimination Practice:
1. 2x – 2y = -20
4x + y = 10
(solution: x = 0, y = 10)

2. x – y = 1
2x + y = 8
(solution: x = 3, y = 2)

3. 3x – y = 4
x + y = 0
(solution: x = 1, y = -1)

Please use the videos below for extra practice or review as needed!

Reminders:
Midterm is next Monday, 4/23/12 at 1700.

Mandatory Videos
(Please be patient as you listen and form questions for this new material. You can keep in mind that this will not be on the midterm and to focus your practice on the other material. The written work is a little light these week to give you extra time to prepare for the midterm.)

1. Intro to Matrices
2. Matrix Operations
4. Inverse Matrices

Mandatory Practice
Practice Midterm
Complete the practice midterm as if it were the “real thing”, without notes. Log properties formulas from class and a calcaultor (not a phone) are allowed.
Include your time and score.

Notes to the wise: Some of the most successful students in the past practiced the practice tests until they achieved the score they desired without notes. Since the practice exams are so closely aligned with the test, there should not be any mystery in what we need to know and the score you desire should be attainable!

Please see the videos from past classes below to help you as you study.

Be ready to complete the midterm at the beginning of class. You’ll have 90 minutes maximum. The midterm should take far less than 90 minutes and we will be discussing new material after the test.

Optional Resources

Dear Class,
As you may have noticed, I try to keep homework concise, while also trying to give you resources to practice more if need be. If you need a little more practice to get the results you want, this is for you! After talking with many of you, I wanted to provide additional practice opportunities so I scoured many videos and suggest the following: Use the following videos and pause it before they show the steps. Try the problem on your own and use the video to check your answer or help you with the next step if you get stuck. (If you had to miss part of class, I encourage using all of the following resources.)

I hope this helps! Let me know how you’re doing!
